Chapel Hill

On our long drive back across the state of North Carolina, we stopped in Chapel Hill for gas.  Just down from the station  is this beautiful old Methodist Church.  The setting is so picturesque, and I tried to capture some of its beauty.  Can't stop in Chapel Hill without making a picture of a chapel, I suppose.

Lighthouses Along the Outer Banks (in the order we saw them)

Bodie Island Lighthouse (pronounced body)
This lighthouse was completed in 1872
and stands 150 feet high.

Ocracoke Lighthouse
This is NC's oldest operating lighthouse.
It stands 75 feet tall
and shines 14 miles out to sea.

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse
(also known as American's Lighthouse)
This is the tallest brick beacon in the country
standing 208 feet and is visible for more than 20 miles.
It was officially completed and lit in 1870.
In 1999, it was moved a half mile inland,
to save it from the encroaching Atlantic.

It's lens began flashing in 1875.
