Pa Joe's June 2009 Memories

June is the big month for daylily blooms. Although I have seen them bloom for lots of years now, it is always an anticipated event. It is also a time when I intend to move all of the invaders (varieties in the wrong row) back where they belong. But, for the past couple of years, it has been too hot and dry to dig anything that doesn’t absolutely have to be disturbed. Therefore, the invaders are winning and getting to stay put.

The last few weeks have been very hot and very dry (I suppose everyone knows that except a few westerners!). Lily sales have dropped to zero but they always do this time of year. The vegetable garden, such as it is, gets watered on occasion as we dump the geo-thermal output there. Otherwise, all the plants are thirsty.

Debby and I went to the McMinnville Garden Club to do a daylily presentation on the 9th. A neighbor is the club president and her scheduled presenter cancelled on her at the last minute. Debby fixed several really pretty arrangements and I told the ladies there more than I know about daylilies. Afterwards they bought our lunch (which is how I got Debby to go with me) and we visited for a while.

I have got my October wedding anniversary shopping done already. We are going to see the play, Wicked, in September. The performance will be in Nashville. Matthew and Jenny went to see it in Memphis a few weeks ago. The story revolves around some of the witches from The Wizard of Oz.

By the way, during July Turner Classic Movie channel is doing a salute to 1939---the year of great movies including The Wizard of Oz. Other classics from that year include Gone with the Wind and Stagecoach.

When we made our plans to go to the temple on June 20th, we had no idea that we would be meeting Betsy and Justin there. It turned out to be a really wonderful day. We met there at 8:00 a.m., were there for a couple of hours, and then went to breakfast together. It was a nice relaxed visit with people we love.

There was a lot of phone time logged during Jayce’s tonsillectomy. Also, during this time we found out that Holly was pregnant and sicker than any other pregnant girl has ever been. I think she resolved to pray for twins and never go through this again. Thankfully, Jayce is doing well and Holly has about decided she will make it after all. Debby says that only a man could speak so lightly of this kind of sickness.
