Two Bakeries in Two Days - Another Swarm - & Fruitcake in April

Yesterday (April 25th), Joe and I went to the Nashville Temple.  Afterward, we went to Franklin's historic and beautiful downtown area and did some exploring.  It was a gorgeous day!  Addie Lee had told me once that we should eat at Merridee's sometime when we were there. So, we did.  And, we loved it.  And, we plan to go back.  Joe had their Reuben sandwich and pecan pie.  I had some of the very best chicken salad I have ever eaten on veggie bread, with a chocolate mint brownie for dessert.  Not only did we enjoy a very delicious lunch, we brought a loaf of their veggie bread home with us.  YUM!

While we were there, Joe received a phone call from Billy Jones who, along with some others, were doing an upgrade on our solar arrays.  He had spotted a swarm of bees that had left the hive by the grapevines - swirled around in the air for a while, and then took up very temporary residence on the grapevines just a few feet away.  I just knew Joe would want to hurry home - and even then - they might already be gone.  I had made him promise that we wouldn't come home until he had a new suit.  He said we'd carry through with our original plan.  We stopped by Lori's to drop off the pack 'n play and to see all the renovations they have had done at their house.  We then went suit shopping.  At our third stop, he found one we both really liked at Belk.  And, guess what?  When we got home - right before dark, we drove straight to the grapevines and the swarm was still there!  They are now in a hive and are doing what all good honeybees do - making honey :)

Joe is fully expecting one other hive to swarm - and the one from last night took up residency in his very last hive.  He has been looking for a used table saw to make more and, with Michael Weeter's help, found one in Tracy City.  So, this morning we loaded up and headed that direction.  Twice, our GPS sent us on a crazy route, but we eventually found the guy, bought the saw, and made our way to a bakery we had read about in the Tennessee Magazine.  Joe had their tomato soup and ham/cheese sandwich on wheat and I had their BLT on sourdough.  We enjoyed it, but overall, we weren't as impressed as we were with Merridee's Breadbasket.  The food was good  & the ladies who work there were very hospitable, though.  One of the things the Dutch Maid Bakery is pretty famous for is its fruit cakes, so we brought one of those home with us, along with a loaf of salt rise bread that had just been taken from the oven.

When we got home, we checked on the hive that has some suspicious activity going on - and that is still the case.  Joe is at the barn building the next swarm's new house!  Surely, surely, surely, we will have some Shangri La honey one day soon!
